Slovak Literature in English Translation

Ivana Hostová is a literary translator, translation studies scholar, and literary critic working across Slovak and English. She is an associate professor at the Department of Translation Studies, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, and a senior scholar at the Institute of Slovak Literature of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Hostová’s translations from Slovak into English focus on contemporary poetry, conceptual writing, and texts that test the limits of genre, voice and form. Authors she has translated include Nóra Ružičková, Mila Haugová, Peter Macsovszky, and Katarína Kucbelová, with work published by Seagull Books and in Poem: International English Language Quarterly and Asymptote. Her translations into Slovak include works by Donna Stonecipher, John Fowles, and Joan Didion, as well as periodical publications of Gertrude Stein, Charles Bernstein, and Craig Dworkin. Her recent monograph Chvála odchýlok (In Praise of Aberrations, Aspekt, 2025) examines English translations of Slovak poetry after 1989 and her research on Slovak poetry in English translation has also appeared in Meta: Journal des traducteurs.
