Slovak Literature in English Translation

A selection of poems by Miroslav Válek, who ranks among the most significant figures in modern Slovak poetry. His work combines intimate and existential lyricism with themes relating to civilisation and society. It is characterised by inner tension, psychological depth, irony, sarcasm and vivid imagery. Válek captures the individual in modern civilisation amidst their emotional crises, loneliness, and struggle for meaning, whilst his poetry oscillates between intimacy, scepticism, and social engagement. Co-published by Bloodaxe Books and Modrý Peter and illustrated by Miroslav Cipár, the book won the ‘Most Beautiful Book of Slovakia 1996’ award.
