Slovak Literature in English Translation

Pavol Dobšinský (1828 – 1825) was a writer, translator, and Lutheran pastor, but he is best known for his work as a folklorist. He collected a vast amount of Slovak oral fairy tales, legends, songs, proverbs, riddles, games, customs, and superstitions, and assembled them in eight volumes entitled Prostonárodné slovenské povesti (Simple National Slovak Tales), which are still considered the seminal works of Slovak folklorism.
