Peter Petro

Peter Petro is a literary scholar and translator. He studied at Comenius University in Bratislava before moving to Canada and continuing his studies at the University of British Columbia and the University of Alberta in Edmonton (PhD in Comparative Literature). From 1977 until his retirement in 2019 he taught Russian and Slavic literature at the University of British Columbia and held the Chair of Modern European Studies. While a student in Bratislava, he was also the drummer with the legendary Slovak rock band The Beatmen. Peter Petro is the author of over sixty articles and translations, as well as four books, including The History of Slovak Literature (1995). In 2019 he was awarded the Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav Prize for translating and promoting Slovak literature in the English-speaking world.
