Slovak Literature in English Translation

Martin Smatana is a graduate of animation studies at FAMU Film School in Prague, Czech Republic.  His debut movie Rosso Papavero (2015), premiered at Berlinale 2015, was screened at more than 200 film festivals and received 15 international awards and his next animated picture, The Kite, was shown at over 150 film festivals and won 32 international awards.  In 2021 he wrote and illustrated Rok dobrých správ (A Year of Good News), with two further collections – the first two also in English – were published by Monokel in Slovakia in 2022 and 2023. In 2023 a compilation of the first two editions of The Year of Good News collections was published by Boxer Books and Union Square Books.
