Slovak Literature in English Translation

Julia Sherwood is a London-based translator and promoter of Slovak literature. She translates fiction and non-fiction from and into English, Slovak, Czech, Polish, and Russian, working on her translations into English together with her husband Peter Sherwood. She curates the Slovak list for Seagull Books, and is the co-editor of the anthology The Book of Bratislava, published by Comma Press in March 2026. In 2019 she was awarded the Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav prize for translating and promoting Slovak literature in the English-speaking world, and in 2023 she received the Minister of Culture Award of the Slovak Republic for her outstanding long-term contributions in the field of arts.
