Slovak Literature in English Translation

Jana Juráňová (1957), a columnist, translator author of fiction and children’s books as well as theatre and radio plays. In 1993 she co-founded ASPEKT, a feminist cultural, educational and publishing organisation. She has written several plays, children’s books and short stories as well as My 7 Lives, a book-length memoir-interview with Slovak veteran journalist Agneša Kalinová. Her novel Beadswomen, was nominated for the Anasoft Litera Award and received of the Bibliotéka award for women’s fiction in 2006. Ilona: My Life with the Bard, (2008) was shortlisted for the 2009 Anasoft Litera Award for original Slovak fiction. Her books have been translated into ten languages and her translations from English works by Virginia Woolf, Judith Butler, Margaret Atwood and Jeanette Winterson and several other authors. Juráňová’s writing subverts traditional gender stereotypes and Slovak myths and ironically unmasks key Slovak historical figures at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as well as the pseudo-intellectuals of today and former dissidents. Her latest collection of short stories, Malibu na Dunaji (Malibu on the Danube) has been longlisted for the 2026 Anasoft Litera Prize.
